What is a filling?

Put very simply, fillings are used to fill in cavities that can develop in the teeth. Most cavities develop as a result of tooth decay, and if left untreated they can get larger and larger over time.
Why might I need a filling?

If you’re experiencing an increase in sensitivity, pain when you chew or bite down, or an on-going toothache, then that might mean you’re in need of a filling. As mentioned, fillings are required when there is a cavity present in the tooth, which are most often caused by tooth decay. They can also come about as a result of injury or trauma.

What is a filling made of?

Fillings have traditionally been made of a metal amalgam material. This material is silver in appearance, and as a result can be fairly noticeable in the mouth, especially when we smile. This can then result in patients feeling self-conscious.
Modern advancements in dental materials means this no longer has to present a problem, and at Brixton Smiles we’re able to provide our patients with white fillings. These white fillings are made of composite resin and are designed to fit seamlessly in with the rest of the mouth. Tooth-coloured and highly-durable, white fillings present the most natural-looking option when receiving a filling.

What is the treatment like?

When getting a filling, we will first numb the area surrounding the tooth being treated so that you won’t feel anything. Then, the weakened or decayed parts of the tooth will be removed before we clean, shape, and dry the tooth in preparation. When the filling has been applied, we will carefully and skilfully shape it to best mimic your natural tooth.
